Emergency C-Sections
Emergency cesarean sections, or C-Sections, amount for roughly half of all of the C-sections performed. This is due to a variety of reasons. One reason for an increase in the number of c-sections being performed is that babies are larger now than they were previouls.
The most common reason for an emergency c-section is the inability of the baby to fit through the pelvic canal. This means that the labor will be unsuccessful. Unfortunately, there is no reliable test to determine whether a baby will be too big for a normal birth so it is up to the doctors and nurses in the room to pay attention to the baby’s vital signs during labor.
Another reason for an emergency c-section is fetal stress. Fetal stress can be due to a variety of reason or no noticeable reason at all. Placental abruption is a common cause of fetal stress. This occurs when the placenta disconnects from the wall of the uterus before delivery and deprives the baby of oxygen before birth. The umbilical cord can also become wrapped around a baby’s arm, leg, or neck. A hole in the amniotic membrane can be a cause of stress or even overlong pregnancy. Two other causes are diminished amniotic fluid and squeezing of the baby’s head through the pelvic canal.
Malpresentation is another reason for an emergency c-section. This is performed when labor begins with the baby in a position that will make delivery more dangerous and more difficult for both the mother and baby. The most common form is breech birth.
