Are Birth Injuries Unavoidable?
Childbirth should be one of the happiest moments of any parent’s life. We trust medical experts and medical technology to ensure the health of both the mother and the infant, and there is little doubt that today, the field of medicine is better equipped than ever to handle something as common and inevitable as childbirth. Yet statistics suggest that some 5 out of every 1000 babies are injured during childbirth. While some injuries are minor, others may cause problems and pain for years to come.
The most important question, then, is: are injuries associated with childbirth preventable? Can parents and doctors really ensure the safety of a newborn, or is it simply a game of chance?
The answer is yes – and no. It is true that some birth injuries are unavoidable. For example, in some cases, the shape of a woman’s pelvis makes it difficult for a baby to be born vaginally, and may cause bruising or other injuries. Unforeseeable circumstances can always cause a baby to be injured during childbirth. The good news is that such injuries are frequently minor and cause no lasting damage, requiring at most a simple surgery to repair damaged nerve tissue. Children who suffer such injuries have little to fear later in life.
However, other types of birth injury are much less innocuous. Medical error on the part of a doctor or nurse can cause serious problems for parent and child. An incorrect prescription taken during pregnancy, a suspicious symptom which goes ignored, a mishandling of important medical tools – these factors and more can contribute to a lasting injury to a newborn infant. These injuries are – and should be – preventable. In many cases, parents can successfully seek compensation for their child’s injuries in a court of law, holding the doctor, nurse, or hospital responsible.
